The Peony Project Prompt: Community

Community: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common.

How do I feel about community?

According to Myers Briggs I'm 51% introverted & 49% extroverted. This means I can be that social butterfly when necessary but deep down I just like to be left alone to vegetate.

Well if I'm honest. Being around people can be nice but it also requires a lot of energy and often leaves me quite exhausted.  Take the holidays for example. During this time you engage conversations that often start out with a ton of small talk.  As an introverted extrovert this is often un-appalling and quite tiring. Just thinking about the holidays kind of make me sick to my stomach. I working on preparing my mind mentally for the interviews. For example:

Q: Are you still teaching?
A: Yes, until may when my teaching program ends
Q: Oh, Do you like it?
A: *thinks to self which response will get the least amount of follow-up questions*
Q: Do you have a boyfriend?
A: Yep, his name is Jesus and he's Jewish... Or should I say....No, and I'm content and living with an eternity focused mind.....Too much?

Now that we've gotten that out of the way. Lately this word community has been popping up in my face constantly. Even though I tend to cringe at the thought of community as I continued to think about it I'm a part of several communities. Virtual ones to be exact.

Communities I'm a part of....

Pinky Promise Movement. Pinky Promise is a Non-profit dedicated to seeing women honor Christ with their lives and bodies.  Pinky Promise Movement has had a large positive impact on my life and growth as a Christian. I also get to serve as the Group Coordinator for this organization where I get to work with Pinky Promise Groups all around the world and in particular on college campuses.

The Peony Project. This community is the reason you're reading this post right now. It's a community for women who love Jesus and just so happen to blog. I've truly enjoyed being a part of this group.

She is She Apart: Believe it or not this community was started by yours truly, the introverted extrovert. It's a community for Christian single women. We encourage and sharpen one another to live with an eternity focused mind.

What does God say about community?

I know that Jesus loves community and that community is vital for me as a Christian.  Scripture says, "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?" Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 (NIV)

According to this verse my "introverted don't really want to be bothered" tendencies has caused me at points in my life to be "the one who is pitied on" but God is slowly turning me into the one who actually allows someone to help me up. And hopefully I can be one to help others up as well. Slowly but surely.

So maybe I don't hate community after all. It is a little scary though. It requires you to be vulnerable, self-less, and trusting all at the same time. All areas this perfectionist, spoiled only child, and self-sufficient person is working on.

Considering all of that being an active part of virtual communities is a HUGE step for me. I'm working on in-person community but hey at least I'm making progress.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I started a ministry for Christian single women called She is Set Apart. The mission of She is Set Apart is to reclaim what it means to be a single Christian woman. We believe that we are God's workmanship, his masterpiece, and his treasured possession. At our core we desire to see single women living life with purpose and eternity focused minds. We view ourselves as a community of single women who sharpen and encourage one another to be productive for the Kingdom during their singleness. I'd love to have you join She is Set Apart & come to our 2015 Conference.
